The School of Dental Medicine is very branched out in its international activity. This is evident in both its students’ and teachers’ mobility.

Professor Thomas Attin
Visiting Professor at the Department of Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry for academic years 2022./2023. and 2023./2024.
Thomas Attin acquired the dental state exam in 1989 at the University of Marburg, where he received his doctorate in 1991. From 1989-1999 he worked at the universities in Heidelberg, Cologne and Freiburg i. Brg. and in a dental practice. In 1997 he was appointed as Privatdozent. In 1999 he became Acting Head of the Department of Operative Dentistry and Periodontology, Freie Universität Berlin as a visiting professor. In 2000 he was appointed Full Professor and Director of the Department of Operative Dentistry, Preventive Dentistry and Periodontology at University of Göttingen. In 2006 he was appointed a Full professor and Director of the Clinic for Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Cariology at University of Zurich. Professor Attin is the dean of the Centre for Dentistry and vice-dean of the Medical Faculty, University of Zürich, Switzerland from 2013 to 2022. His research focuses on the various branches of conservative dentistry with a focus on Preventive Dentistry and Cariology. Since 2022, he is a Visiting Professor at the University Zagreb, Croatia.
Professor Attin is author/co-author of 539 original scientific publications with more than 17500 citations. His h-factor amounts to 67. So far he held 422 invited lectures and 293 hands-on-workshops. He received 40 scientific awards for his accomplishments.
Prof. Rui Pedro Pinheiro de Albuquerque

Dr Rui Albuquerque completed his undergraduate dental degree in Portugal (2006), his Masters degree in Oral Medicine (2007) and PhD (2012) in the University of Barcelona. He then moved to the UK, where he completed his specialist training in Oral Medicine in Birmingham . After completing specialist training (FDS OM) Rui was appointed Consultant in Oral Medicine at Guy’s Hospital, London, where he leads the Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) clinic. His additional clinical duties include the running of multiple general oral medicine clinics, where he provides a specialist outpatient service for those with complex oral mucosal disease. His research interests include Oral Potentially Malignant disorders, Oral Cancer and Facial Pain disorders, in particular BMS, having completed multiple collaborative research work in this field. (ORCID: 0000-0002-1741-8871) . I co-authored an e-learning module on Oral Cancer and served as the principal investigator for a project on smoking cessation advice for healthcare professionals, which resulted in several publications in educational journals and books. This project was funded by the European Union (KA2). Additionally, I was the principal investigator on a cohort study focusing on oral lichen planus, which received funding from the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) and was adopted into the NIHR portfolio. Currently, I am leading a European Union grant aimed at developing e-learning resources to train healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and management of Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (www.OPMDcare.com).

Dr. Treister is Chief of the Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Clinical
Director of Oral Medicine and Oral Oncology at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Treister earned his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and subsequently completed his Oral Medicine and Oral Biology training at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he is an Associate Professor of Oral Medicine in the Department of Oral Medicine, Infection and Immunity.
He is board certified in Oral Medicine and practices at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, with special interest in oral mucosal diseases, salivary gland diseases, orofacial pain disorders, and oral complications in cancer patients.
He has published extensively in the field of oral medicine with an emphasis on oral complications of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation and oral graft-versus-host disease, and is a past president of the American Academy of Oral Medicine. He is co-principal investigator of an NIH R01 grant entitled “Long Term Oral Health Outcomes in the Chronic GVHD Consortium” and serves as site principal investigator for an NIH U01 grant entitled “Clinical Registry of Dental Outcomes in Head and Neck Cancer Patients”.

Prof. Mladen Kuftinec

Mladen [“Miki”] Kuftinec was born in Croatia, where he was educated in the Classical tradition, after which he completed studies in Stomatology. Upon coming to America in 1965, he studied in Boston [DMD at Harvard, Doctorate of Sciences at MIT and Specialty of Orthodontics at Harvard]. He then embarked to a life-long career in dental education, holding key academic positions in Virginia, Kentucky and New York City. He was frequently invited speaker nationally and internationally. In 2006 he was named a Visiting Professor at U Zagreb, where he spent a Sabbatical Year in the Department of Orthodontics. He is author of over 300 scientific papers, abstracts, chapters and books. He has been named a Visiting Professor in 8 universities and was honored as a Honorary Citizen in 7 world’s cities, including the City of Zagreb in 1992. Prof. Kuftinec also served as Director of the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists, a national organization regulating the process of recognition of nutrition specialists. He is formally trained in music and performed in the world’s most prestigious venues, including numerous appearances at NY’s Carnegie Hall. Currently he lives in Florida.

He graduated in 1963 at School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb. Shortly after, in 1968, he graduated at School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. He started working at Department of Oral Pathology in Zagreb as an assistant, from 1966 till 1968, prior to his postdoctoral study at School of Dental Medicine in Zurich, Switzerland. In 1972 he got a position at Department of Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Cariology, Dental Institute, University of Zürich. In 1978 he habilitated at School of Medicine, University of Zürich, where in 1984 he was appointed as a University Professor. He was in charge of a well-known caries preventive program from 1982 till 2000 for all School Clinics in Zürich. He is author and co-author of many scientific publications, recognized member of many different scientific societies and lecturer and instructor on numerous theoretical and practical training courses in Periodontology in Croatia and worldwide. In 1992, he became Visiting professor at School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb. He was also re-elected as Visiting professor for academic years 2007/08 and 2008/09.

In 1959 he got a position at Eastman Institute in Sweden at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. His field of interest were endodontic problems associated with traumatized teeth with open apices and in that regard he is probably most recognized for the procedure he developed called “Cvek-type pulpotomy”. In 1980 he was appointed as Visiting professor in South Africa (Johannesburg and Cape Town). He received recognition on several occasions for his extraordinary contributions to dentistry and dental traumatology (1994 - IADT with its first certificate of appreciation, 2003 - Ralph Summer Award from the AAE). He retired in 1992 from the position as the head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the Eastman Institute. From 1994, he was Visiting professor at School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb.
